Masada String Trio is an American chamber-jazz ensemble formed as an offshoot of John Zorn's Masada project. The group includes violinist Mark Feldman, cellist Erik Friedlander, and double bassist Greg Cohen. Early recorded appearances include Bar Kokhba (1996), The Circle Maker (1998), and Filmworks XI: Secret Lives (2002). In 2004, the trio released the live album 50th Birthday Celebration Volume 1, which documents Zorn's 50th-birthday concerts at Tonic in New York. Releases also include Azazel: Book of Angels Volume 2 (2005) and Haborym: Book of Angels Volume 16 (2010), both of which include compositions from Zorn's second Masada book. Performance styles include improvisation in a classical-chamber setting that blends Jewish melodic modes with free-jazz improvisation. Recordings also include the 2008 album Filmworks XX: Sholem Aleichem, recorded with Rob Burger and Carol Emmanuel.
