Cormorant was an American progressive metal band from San Francisco, California, established in 2007. The ensemble was founded by drummer Brennan Kunkel and bassist Arthur von Nagel and reached professional recognition for its independent status and a musical style that incorporates elements of genres including blues, folk, and death metal. Their recording career began with the debut extended play The Last Tree (2007). The ensemble subsequently released the debut studio recording Metazoa (2009), which was produced by Billy Anderson. Cormorant reached wider visibility after the release of the studio recording Dwellings (2011), which was named the best metal record of 2011 by the publication NPR Music. Their discography included the studio recordings Earth Diver (2014) and Diaspora (2017). The lead vocalist and bassist Arthur von Nagel was a member of the group from 2007 to 2012 and was replaced by Marcus Luscombe in 2013. The ensemble also included guitarists Nick Cohon and Matt Solis. Cormorant disbanded in 2019.
