Stingray, a South African rock band, was formed in 1978 by Dennis East (vocals), Eddie Boyle (bass), and Mike Pilot (guitar). The group, which also included Danny Anthill (keyboards, flute) and Shaun Wright (drums), released their debut album Stingray in 1979. Their subsequent single "Better the Devil You Know" (1979) reached number 4 on the South African charts. In 1980, they released their second album Operation Stingray. That same year, drummer Shaun Wright was replaced by Wally Cullis following a shark attack that resulted in the loss of Wright's leg. Eddie Boyle was also replaced by Gerald "Jiggs" Downing on bass. Despite their popularity in South Africa, Stingray achieved limited success internationally and disbanded in 1981. Dennis East passed away at the age of 73 on September 12, 2022.
