Edmund Welles was an American bass clarinet quartet from Oakland, California, formed in 1996 by Cornelius Boots. The group included Jonathan Russell, Jeff Anderle, and Aaron Novik, blending genres such as avant-garde, gospel, jazz, and heavy metal into what they called "heavy chamber music." Their debut album, Agrippa's 3 Books, was released in August 2005 with support from Chamber Music America. The group followed up with Tooth & Claw (2007) and Imagination Lost (2011). Edmund Welles performed cover versions of songs by groups such as Radiohead, Primus, Black Sabbath, The Residents, Iron Maiden, and Spinal Tap, alongside approximately 50 original compositions. The group disbanded in 2015 when Boots retired from bass clarinet.
