Greg Trooper, born on January 13, 1956 in Neptune, New Jersey, was an American singer‑songwriter. After early performances in Greenwich Village, he lived in Austin, Texas, and Lawrence, Kansas, where he honed his craft at the University of Kansas. His debut We Won’t Dance (1986) led to the 1992 release Everywhere, produced by Stewart Lerman; the title track was later covered by Billy Bragg. Subsequent albums include Noises in the Hallway (1996), Popular Demons (1998), Straight Down Rain (2001), Floating (2003), Make It Through This World (2005), Upside‑Down Town (2011), and Incident on Willow Street (2013). Trooper’s songs were covered by Steve Earle and Vince Gill, and he worked with guitarist Larry Campbell and bassist Garry Tallent. He died of pancreatic cancer on January 15, 2017.
