Bongwater was an American psychedelic rock band formed in 1987 by Magnuson and Mark Kramer. Their early recordings featured psychedelic-era cover songs and original tracks with dreamy vocals by Magnuson. The band's debut EP, Breaking No New Ground! was released in 1987, followed by their album Double Bummer in 1988. They gained college radio success with hits like "The Power of Pussy" and the nine-minute track "Folk Song". They were known for unique interpretations of songs by other artists, including covers of "Kisses Sweeter than Wine" by The Weavers and "You Don't Love Me Yet" by Roky Erickson. Notable collaborations included guest appearances by Fred Frith, Peter Stampfel, and Fred Schneider. They released several albums during their active years, including Too Much Sleep (1989), The Power of Pussy (1990), and The Big Sell-Out (1992). The group disbanded in 1992 due to internal conflicts.
