Vagif Mustafazadeh, born on March 16, 1940 in Baku, Azerbaijan SSR, was a pianist known for blending jazz with traditional Azerbaijani folk music, mugham. His mother, a piano teacher, significantly influenced his musical education. He graduated from the Baku State Musical School in 1963 and later attended the Azerbaijan State Conservatoire. Despite Soviet prohibitions on jazz, Mustafa Zadeh learned through movies and BBC radio, gaining fame performing at local universities and clubs. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, his popularity grew as Baku became a hub for locally inspired jazz. He led ensembles like Orero and the Qafqaz jazz trio. Notable achievements include winning the 8th International Competition of Jazz Composers in Monaco in 1978 for "Waiting for Aziza" and being named Honored Artist of Azerbaijan SSR. Mustafa Zadeh died on December 16, 1979, shortly after a concert in Tashkent.
