National Wake was a South African punk rock band formed in Johannesburg in 1978 by architecture student Ivan Kadey and brothers Gary Khoza and Punka Khoza. Guitarist Steve Moni later joined the group. Emerging from underground jam sessions in a commune, the group became South Africa's first multiracial punk band and used their music as a form of protest against the apartheid regime. Their signature tune was "International News", which decried state censorship and the atrocities of the Angolan War of Independence. They released the studio album National Wake (1981) and the compilation album Walk in Africa 1979-81 (2013). The band disbanded in 1982 under government pressure after their album was withdrawn from sale. They were featured in the documentary Punk in Africa.
