Liliane Green, known professionally as Lil Green, and born on December 22, 1919, in Port Gibson, Mississippi, was a classic female blues singer-songwriter. After her parents' early death, she moved to Chicago at a young age and began singing in local cabarets and clubs. At 18, she recorded for Lester Melrose, releasing several successful singles that gained popularity among African American audiences. Her breakthrough came with "Romance in the Dark" (1940), a collaboration with Big Bill Broonzy on guitar. Green's career flourished as she performed at venues like the Savoy Ballroom and Apollo Theater in Harlem, often accompanied by Tiny Bradshaw's orchestra or Luis Russell. Despite her early success, Green struggled to maintain popularity post-World War II. She passed away from pneumonia on April 14, 1954.
