Internacional Privados traces back to singer and bandleader José Luis Arroyo (born Marco Antonio Arroyo Herrera, 1967), who relocated to Tingo María as a young adult after starting out in local salsa groups in Végueta and later moving into Peruvian cumbia in the early 1990s. After a stint with Explosión Latina in 1993, Arroyo and four bandmates officially launched Internacional Privados de Tingo María in 1994, cutting their first recording, “No hay felicidad,” a foundational track for the group’s Amazonian-leaning cumbia sound. By 1998, Internacional Privados had expanded beyond the Huánuco circuit with a first national run in Lima, and the project drew industry backing from vernacular star Eusebio “Chato” Grados as a representative, plus high-profile opening slots for major acts including Agua Marina, Armonía 10, and technocumbia singer Rossy War. The group also crossed into mainstream TV via appearances on Peruvian music programs such as Panamericana Televisión’s La Movida de los Sábados. In 2000, Arroyo’s relationship with a later business partner ended in a dispute over the “Internacional Privados” name and ownership, which pushed him back to Tingo María and set the stage for his subsequent branding under El Lobo y La Sociedad Privada. In later catalog releases under the Internacional Privados name, the song “Año Nuevo” appeared on the compilation Grandes Éxitos Vol. 4 (2019) alongside other widely circulated cuts such as “Shipbo Enamorado” and “Nostalgia.”
