The Transmitters were an English art‑rock/post‑punk group formed in Ealing, West London, in 1977, with vocalist John Quinn at the forefront. Their first single, "Party", appeared on Ebony Records in 1978, followed by the debut album 24 Hours the same year. In 1979, the band released the EP Still Hunting for the Ugly Man and recorded a John Peel Session, while supporting acts such as the Police, the Human League, and the Fall. A second Peel Session in 1981 preceded the album And We Call That Leisure Time, issued on Heartbeat Records. After a brief split in 1980, the lineup evolved into Transmitters Presumed Dead before reverting to the original name and releasing the single "The Mechanic" in 1989. Earlier recordings from 1987–1989 were later issued as the download album Count Your Blessings (1987/89) in 2006. The group reunited in March 2007 to promote their compilation I Fear No-One… (2006), which compiled tracks from their first Peel session.
