Peter was born in Cape Town and started playing the guitar at the age of 10. The idea of playing in a band and performing on stage was something he wanted to do from a very young age. He was self-taught and at the age of 12, took classical lessons for a year. At the age of 13, his father bought him his first electric guitar. This was when he formed his first band called Ad Astra (Latin for ‘to the stars’) and played at school concerts and variety shows. He continued in this band throughout high school. During this time, he was also particularly interested in the recording side of music. He was fortunate enough to have a father who was an avid hi-fi enthusiast who had a unique tape recorder, which had overdubbing capabilities. Many school holidays were spent in Peter’s parents’ living room recording music. His other dream was one day to own his own recording studio.
After he matriculated, he joined another band called Wildeside. This band eventually broke up when Peter relocated to Johannesburg. He was 20 years old at the time. In his first year in Johannesburg, Peter auditioned to join many bands but couldn’t seem to find the right mix of musicians. He finally accepted an offer to join a young band called Boss. This was at the end of 1980. Boss became Streetalk and he was with them until the end of 1983 at which time he left to record his first album (on vinyl) under the name Off the Edge.
Off the Edge, however, remained a studio project with no live performances.In 1984, Peter joined The Mattisson Brothers and played with them for a year. After this, he got involved in video production and lost all interest in music. This was mainly due to being disillusioned with the industry as a whole. He sold all his gear and was very content until 1987 when the possibility of putting together a trio came about. Peter exploited the idea of using backing tapes to supplement the sound. This was before sequencers were available. This proved to be very successful and the trio entitled Domino, lasted for about three and a half years.In 1995, Peter teamed up with a very talented musician and friend, Dave Sharp and formed the duo, Times Two. They played together for 3 years at pubs and corporate events throughout Gauteng. He broke away from Dave in 1998 and joined a graphic design/multimedia company where he remained until 2004. During this time, he put together a home recording studio consisting of one room and a variety of equipment. It was in this room that he recorded and produced four Off the Edge albums and one side project entitled Age of Innocence.In 2004 Peter was introduced to a singer called Clint Cunningham who had a Creedence Clearwater Revival tribute band. He invited Clint to sing on the fifth Off the Edge album called Site Under Construction. It was during the recording of this album that Clint asked Peter to join his band. Peter went on to accept this invitation and Clint & Co. was formed.Site Under Construction created a lot of interest and there was increasing pressure from within the band as well as outside the band to do a live performance. On 14 August 2004, Off The Edge performed live to a full house for the first time. Further performances on 18 September 2004 and 21 May 2005 followed.In 2006, Peter achieved his childhood dream and now has his own recording studio. He built Foxglove Studios over a period of a year and has recorded numerous albums in many different genres of music, including albums for Clint & Co. Peter has been playing guitar for Clint & Co. since 2004 and is currently busy with the recording of the sixth Off the Edge album entitled Cast in Stone.
In 2010, Peter recorded and released his first solo instrumental album entitled “Revelation”. Encouraged by the reaction to this album he has since released “Living for the Moment” in 2013, Wide Open Spaces” in 2016 and “Big Moving Parts” in 2021. These instrumental albums have been largely influenced by bands such as Pink Floyd, The Alan Parsons Project and Camel.
Peter is currently busy with recording his next album which is to be entitled “Full Circle”.
