Les Go de Koteba was formed in 1993 in Abidjan under Souleymane Koly. The original trio consisted of Niama Kanté from Guinea, Maaté Keïta from Ivory Coast-Guinea, and Awa Sangho from Mali. They performed in various languages including Malinké, Bété, Songhaï, Bambara, Khassonké, Nouchi, and French. Initially known as the three Go, the group's name is derived from "Go," a nouchi term for "girl," and Kotéba, a traditional Mandingue theater ensemble founded by Souleymane Koly in 1974. The group released their debut album Les Go De Koteba in 1997. Following Niama Kanté's departure to Japan, the group continued as a duo. In 2011, Awa Sangho began a solo career in New York and released her album Ala Ta in 2016.
