Brian Melvin, born November 1, 1958, in San Francisco, California, is an American jazz drummer, percussionist, educator, and composer. Renowned for his versatility, he has performed and recorded with leading jazz artists including Jaco Pastorius, Joe Henderson, Mike Stern, John Scofield, Michael Brecker, and Joe Lovano. One of his most notable collaborations was with Pastorius, with whom he recorded five albums, including Standards Zone (1986). After moving to New York City in 1987, Melvin became house drummer at the Blue Note Jazz Club and later co-founded the BeatleJazz project with pianist Dave Kikoski. Since the 2000s, he has increasingly explored world music, incorporating tablas and hand percussion into his work while continuing to lead his own ensembles.
