Adagio, a French progressive metal band, was formed in 2000 by guitarist Stéphan Forté. The group originated from Montpellier and Paris, blending heavy metal with power metal, classical music, and contemporary influences. Their music was characterized by a mix of aggressive riffs and melodic elements, often incorporating orchestrations and neoclassical influences. Forté's early compositions led to the release of Visions, a demo that garnered attention from instrument brands like Rocktron and Lâg. Adagio's debut album, Sanctus Ignis, was released in 2001 and achieved significant success, particularly in France and Japan. The band has performed internationally, sharing stages with artists such as Robert Plant and Kamelot.
