Bilders, a New Zealand music group with varying lineups, emerged in 1980. The band gained initial traction through self-recorded 7-inch vinyl releases between 1980 and 1982, leading to their debut studio album Beatin Hearts (1983) released by Flying Nun Records. Known for their playful approach to branding, the group has been referred to by various names such as Die Bilder, Bilderbergers, and Soluble Fish. Bilders' early material was characterized by a rough, lo-fi recording style, with their 1985 song "The Alligator Song" gaining a cult following on New Zealand student radio stations. Subsequent albums include Conch3 (1985), Cut (1994), and Chrysanthemum Storm (2008). Throughout their career, Bilders has collaborated with numerous musicians, including Bill Direen, Campbell McLay, and Chris Knox. Their music has been reissued by labels such as Grapefruit and Zelle Records.
