Phillip John "Pip" Proud was born on September 11, 1947, in Adelaide, Australia. He gained a cult following in the 1960s with his idiosyncratic song-poems. His first album, De Da De Dum, released in 1967, featured his soft voice and guitar music. In 1968, Proud signed to the Phillips/Phonogram label and released Adreneline & Richard. The album included tracks such as "De Da De Dum" and "Purple Boy Gang", which received positive reviews in Go-Set magazine. His second album, A Bird in the Engine, was released in 1969. Proud traveled to Britain in late 1969 but returned to Australia in 1971, focusing on writing poetry and novels throughout the 1970s. He resumed recording in the mid-1990s with albums like Eagle-Wise (1996) and One of These Days (1998). Proud passed away in 2010.
