The Getaway Plan was formed in 2004 in Melbourne, Australia, by Matthew Wright (lead vocals, piano, rhythm guitar) and Clint Owen Ellis (lead guitar). The duo began performing as a pop‑punk group before adding drummer Aaron Barnett and bassist Dave Anderson, creating a heavier sound that would define their early releases. Their first commercial effort, the EP Hold Conversation (2006), gained national attention on Triple J and led to a contract with Boomtown Records. In 2008 the band released their debut studio album Other Voices, Other Rooms, which peaked at number 14 on the ARIA Albums Chart and topped the Australian Independent charts; the single "Where the City Meets the Sea" earned AIR Award recognition. The follow‑up album Requiem (2011) was produced by David Bottrill and entered the ARIA top 50. After a brief hiatus in 2009, the group re‑emerged in 2010, signing with We Are Unified and releasing Requiem in November. Line‑up changes saw Dan Maio replace Aaron Barnett in 2014, and the band released Dark Horses (2015) independently, debuting at number 10 on the ARIA Albums Chart and Number 1 on the AIR Charts.
