The Gift is a Portuguese alternative rock and synthpop band from Alcobaça. Formed in 1994, the group consists of singer Sónia Tavares, keyboardist Nuno Gonçalves, bassist John Gonçalves and guitarist Miguel Ribeiro. Original member Ricardo Braga performed with the ensemble until 1998. The band performed its first show in July 1995 at the Alcobaça Monastery. In 1997, they released the demo record Digital Atmosphere, which was followed by a tour. The ensemble established its own label, La Folie Records, and released its debut studio album, Vinyl, in 1998. The record was named album of the year by the newspaper Diário de Notícias and sold more than 35,000 copies. In 2001, the group issued the album Film, which was produced by Howie B and earned a gold certification for selling 25,000 units. The ensemble performed at international events including the Expo 2000 in Hanover and the South by Southwest festival in 2002. Their studio recording AM-FM (2004) also achieved gold status. In 2005, The Gift won the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Portuguese Act. The band released the live recording Fácil de Entender in 2006. In 2011, the ensemble released the album Explode, which reached Number 1 on the Portuguese charts. This was followed by the recordings Primavera (2012) and the compilation 20 (2015). In 2016, the band collaborated with producer Brian Eno on the single “Love Without Violins”. Eno also co-wrote and produced their 2017 album, Altar, which was mixed by the producer Flood. The group's more recent releases included the albums Verão (2019) and Coral (2022).
