Machine is an American funk and disco ensemble from New York City established in 1977. The group was founded by the musician Jay Stovall, and included Kevin Nance and Clare Bathé. They achieved professional recognition for the track “There but for the Grace of God Go I” (1979) which reached number 77 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 8 on the Hot Dance Club Play chart. Their recording career began with the debut studio recording Machine (1979). Their discography included the studio recording Moving On (1980), and the tracks “Is It Love” (1980), and “Power and Reason” (1980). The ensemble became inactive in 1981, but resumed activity for a tour in 2009. The track “There but for the Grace of God Go I” achieved professional recognition for appearing in the series The Get Down (2016), and the video game Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City.
