Brian Dewan was born on June 14, 1963 in the United States. He is an American multi-media artist who produced music, audio-visual performances, paintings, furniture, and custom musical instruments. His work established a cross-genre style that blended folk-tinged vocals with instrumental electronic music. His professional music career began in the early 1990s with the release of the EP Hello Recording Club (1993), followed by his debut album, Tells the Story (1993). He released the subsequent solo albums The Operating Theatre (2001) and Words of Wisdom (2007), which served as the first volume of his folk-archiving Humanitarium Series. Alongside his cousin Leon Dewan, he designed and constructed custom analog synthesizers under the name Dewanatron, releasing collaborative albums such as Dewanatron (2005) and Irregular Hours, Vol. 1 (Live at Pierogi) (2006). He also worked as an illustrator and created cover art for albums such as They Might Be Giants' Lincoln and Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. As a composer, he wrote musical scores as an original member of the Blue Man Group Tubes house band, and performed the song “The Violin” for the soundtrack of the television series Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?.
