The Albany Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1930 as the People's Orchestra of Albany by Italian-born conductor John Carabella. Based in Albany, New York, it is one of the oldest professional symphony orchestra in New York's Capital District. It became known for its mission to perform new works by modern composers, exposing audiences to contemporary orchestral music. The orchestra has performed annually at venues such as the Palace Theatre and Troy Savings Bank Music Hall. In 1992, David Alan Miller began serving as Music Director and Conductor. Notable former music directors include John Carabella, Rudolf Thomas, Ole Windingstad, Edgar Curtis, Julius Hegyi, and Geoffrey Simon. The Albany Symphony has released over 20 CDs encompassing nearly 60 works for labels such as New World Records, CRI Records, and Naxos. The orchestra won Grammy Awards in 2014 and 2021, and was nominated in 2020.
