Loren Nerell, born November 30, 1960 in Long Beach, California, is an American composer known for his work in ambient music and Balinese gamelan. His interest in electronic music began with the Tangerine Dream album Rubycon. Nerell studied analog synthesis at Long Beach Community College and later explored tape manipulation techniques at San Diego State University. He also performed and studied Balinese gamelan music and the microtonal compositions of Harry Partch. Nerell's career includes composing for various media and collaborating with notable artists such as Steve Roach on Terraform (2006) and performing with the Kronos Quartet. He released several albums, including Point of Arrival (1986), Lilin Dewa (1996), and Slow Dream (2012). Nerell earned degrees from Cal Poly Pomona and UCLA, where he worked as a recording technician.
