Anthony Schmalz Conrad, also known as Tony Conrad, was born on March 7, 1940, in Concord, New Hampshire, and was an American video artist, experimental filmmaker, musician, composer, sound artist, teacher, and writer. After briefly studying violin at Baltimore's Peabody Conservatory, he graduated from Harvard University in 1962 with a degree in mathematics. In the early 1960s, he moved to New York City and joined La Monte Young's Theatre of Eternal Music, contributing to the development of drone music and just intonation. His first musical release under his own name was Outside the Dream Syndicate, a collaboration with Faust released in 1973. He also made significant contributions as an experimental filmmaker, notably with his 1966 film The Flicker. He passed away on April 9, 2016.
