Friends of Dean Martinez is an American instrumental rock and post-rock band from Tucson, Arizona. Formed in 1995 as a side project, the ensemble includes musicians from the groups Giant Sand, Calexico and Naked Prey. The band’s musical style incorporates elements of Americana, lounge and surf rock. The group released its debut studio album, The Shadow of Your Smile, in 1995 through the label Sub Pop. Their subsequent recordings included the albums Retrograde (1997), Atardecer (1999) and Random Harvest (2004). The ensemble has composed and performed live scores for films including the silent feature The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. In 2010, founding member Bill Elm and Woody Jackson received awards for Best Original Score at the Machinima Inside Gaming Awards and Spike TV's Video Game Awards for their work on the video game Red Dead Redemption.
