Jean-Pierre Catoul, born on August 14, 1963, in Huy, Belgium, was a jazz violinist known for blending jazz and rock music. He began playing the violin at age six and won first prize at the Conservatory of Liège in 1984. Influenced by Stéphane Grappelli and Jean-Luc Ponty, he turned to jazz and formed his first band, Equation, in 1985 with Éric Legnini. Catoul led his own band starting in 1988, releasing Modern Gardens in 1990. He collaborated with notable musicians including Toots Thielemans, Yehudi Menuhin, Robert Plant, and Jimmy Page. Catoul received the Sax-Award from Belgian jazz critics in 1989 as the most promising young musician. His other albums include Import-Export (1992), Other Worlds with Gwenaël Micault (1994), Summer Winds with Charles Loos (1997), and Restless (1999). He died on January 22, 2001, following a traffic accident.
