Codeine, an American indie rock band, was formed in New York City in 1989 by Stephen Immerwahr (vocals, bass), Chris Brokaw (drums) and John Engle (guitar). The trio’s first release, the Frigid Stars LP, appeared on Glitterhouse in 1990 and was later issued by Sub Pop. In 1992, they issued the Barely Real EP, and in 1994, the album The White Birch followed. After breaking up in 1994, Codeine reunited for a 2012 tour in support of a Numero Group reissue and performed a final show in 2012. In 2023, the group played reunion concerts across the United States and Europe.
