Árstíðir, an Icelandic indie-folk band, was formed in 2008 in Reykjavík. The original trio consisted of Daníel Auðunsson on guitar, Gunnar Már Jakobsson on baritone guitar, and Ragnar Ólafsson on piano. Their album Árstíðir was released in 2009. In 2015, the band released their third studio album Hvel, which they crowdfunded via Kickstarter. The band became known to a wider audience when a YouTube video of an impromptu a cappella performance of "Heyr himna smiður" at Vohwinkel train station in Wuppertal, Germany, went viral in 2013. Árstíðir have released several albums, including Svefns og vöku skil in 2011 and Nivalis in 2018. The band has maintained an independent status, with their own record company, Nivalis in Iceland, and a cooperation contract with Beste Unterhaltung in Germany. Later releases included Blik (2022) and Vetrarsól (Voices of the Winter Sun) (2024).
