Peter Maffay, a fixture of the German music industry, knows no stylistic boundaries and, over the course of his decades-long career, has released well over 200 records, many of which regularly top the charts. Born in Kronstadt, Romania, on August 30, 1949, he moved to Bavaria with his mother at the age of 13. He achieved his big breakthrough in 1970 with the ballad “Du”, which appears on the B-side of his debut album Für das Mädchen, das ich liebe . The pop-rocker earned his first commercial recognition in 1971 with Du bist wie ein Lied, which reached No. 42 on the German album charts. His follow-up albums *Meine Freiheit* (1975) and *Und es war Sommer* (1976) marked a musical shift from Schlager to country and rock ’n’ roll, which earned the artist an even broader audience, before his eighth album, *Steppenwolf* , reached No. 1 on the German album charts for the first time in 1979. This album also featured the ballad “So bist du”, which became Germany’s best-selling single that same year. Maffay’s string of successes continued into the 1980s: Ich will leben (1982), Carambolage (1984), Sonne in der Nacht (1985), Lange Schatten (1988), and Kein Weg zu weit (1989) all topped the charts, establishing the self-composing, passionate musician as one of the most successful German artists of all time even before his 40th birthday.
Meanwhile, the singer reached a young audience through his musical contributions to the Tabaluga series, in which the adventures of the eponymous dragon were set to a variety of musical arrangements. In particular, Tabaluga or the Journey to Reason (1983) and Tabaluga and the Luminous Silence, which spent three weeks at number one on the German LP charts in 1986, became massive hits. Even after that, Maffay lost none of his inimitable significance for the German-language music industry: The albums 38317 (Love), released in 1991, as well as Sixty-Six (1996) and Encounters in 1998 became platinum-certified masterpieces. Maffay, who consistently uses his influence for charitable causes and, among other things, founded the Peter Maffay Foundation for underprivileged children in 2000, was honored twice (in 1996 and 2008) with the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany . He continues to make a musical impact, releasing three more albums—Laut und leise (2005), Ewig (2008), and Wenn das so ist, his 23rd studio album—all of which reached No. 1 on the German charts. Now Maffay has even caught the attention of gangsta rappers like Bushido and Sido, with whom he recorded the track “Erwachsen sein” for their collaborative album 23 (2011)—a reimagined version of the 1983 Tabaluga hit “Nessaja”. Maffay’s later work also continues to bring him unqualified success: Jetzt!, released in 2019, and So weit (2021) once again reached No. 1 on the German album charts—charts on which 20 albums featuring the living legend have already found a place to date. In 2022, the artist achieved another Top 10 hit in Germany and Switzerland with the Tabaluga album Tabaluga – Die Welt ist wunderbar!. His live album We Love Rock’n’Roll (Leipzig-Live-2024) reached the top of the German charts in 2024. Together with singer Johannes Oerding, Peter Maffay achieved another No. 1 hit in Germany with the album Nashville.
