Rajaton, a Finnish a cappella ensemble founded in Helsinki in 1997, derives its name from the Finnish word rajatonmeaning “boundless,” reflecting the group’s expansive repertoire from sacred classical to near Europop. The sextet-Essi Wuorela (soprano), Aili Ikonen (mezzo-soprano), Soila Sariola (alto), Antti Annola (tenor), Ahti Paunu (baritone), and Jussi Chydenius (bass)-has performed in more than 25 countries. Their early albums include Boundless released on 26 October 2001, followed by Sanat in 2002, Joulu on 24 October 2003, Kevät on 20 April 2005, and Out of Bounds on 5 April 2006. By 2005 Rajaton’s album sales had reached 100,000 worldwide, and they have achieved multiple certifications including platinum for Rajaton Sings ABBA and double platinum for Joulu. The ensemble’s discography expanded with Rajaton sings Queen with Lahti Symphony Orchestra in 2008, a 2009 Best of Rajaton 1999–2009 compilation, and later titles such as Tarinoita in 2010 and Salaisuus in 2016. Rajaton’s work, primarily a cappella arrangements by its members with lyrics drawn from Finnish poetry and the Kanteletar, has earned eight gold records and sustained international touring, solidifying its place in contemporary Finnish music history.
