Aphonic Threnody was founded in 2012 in London by guitarist Riccardo Veronese of Gallow God and singer Roberto Mura of URNA. Their debut EP First Funeral was released in August 2013 via Avantgarde Music, featuring contributions from Kostas Panagiotou of Pantheist, Wijlen Wij, Ábel Libisch of Leecher, and Marco Z of URNA. In March 2014, the band released their first full-length album When Death Comes on Doomentia Records. Aphonic Threnody continued to release albums including Of Loss and Grief (2017), The Great Hatred (2020), The All Consuming Void (2021), and The Loneliest Walk (2022). The band's music is characterized by its sound within the funeral doom genre, often incorporating cello and piano alongside traditional metal instrumentation.
