Venus and the Moon was a duo consisting of Frally Hynes and Rain Phoenix, formed in 2014 in Los Angeles. They met at a friend's birthday party in Los Angeles where they sang together and discovered their vocal chemistry. Their debut single "Hungry Ghost" and their self-titled extended play Venus and the Moon were both released on November 11, 2014, through Mother May Records. Drawing general inspiration from influential women in country music such as Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, and Linda Ronstadt, the duo released their debut studio album Brother, Son on July 15, 2016. The concept album was about the important men in their lives and featured the single "Marry Me", as well as the song "Die Slow". Rain Phoenix engineered and recorded the entire album using a Tascam four-track that had belonged to her late brother, River Phoenix.
