Angelika Kirchschlager is an Austrian mezzo-soprano born on November 24, 1965, in Salzburg. She achieved professional recognition for a musical career characterized by opera and lieder and for receiving the title of Österreichische Kammersängerin in 2007. Kirchschlager achieved professional recognition for a career that began after she studied percussion and piano at the Mozarteum and vocal training under the musician Gerhard Kahry and the musician Walter Berry at the Vienna Music Academy. She achieved professional recognition for winning three prizes at the Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition in 1991 and joining the Graz Opera. Kirchschlager achieved professional recognition for becoming a member of the Vienna State Opera in 1993 and debuting as Octavian in the opera Der Rosenkavalier (1993). Her recording career began with the debut studio recording Mahler, Alma Mahler & Korngold, Lieder (1997) followed by the studio recording When Night Falls (1999). Kirchschlager achieved professional recognition for performing as Sophie in the world premiere of the opera Sophie's Choice (2002) at the Royal Opera House and the role of Mélisande in the opera Pelléas et Mélisande (2006). Her discography included the studio recording Le nozze di Figaro (2004) receiving a Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording in 2005. Kirchschlager achieved professional recognition for winning three Echo Klassik awards and announcing her retirement from the stage in 2024 to focus on her professorship.
