Herbert Joos, born on March 21, 1940, in Karlsruhe, Germany, was a trumpeter and flugelhornist known for his contributions to jazz. He began playing trumpet independently before studying double bass in 1958. In the mid-1960s, Joos joined the Modern Jazz Quintet Karlsruhe, which later evolved into Fourmenonly. His debut solo album, The Philosophy of the Flügelhorn, was released in 1974. He was also a member of the Vienna Art Orchestra during the 1980s and collaborated with various artists including Patrick Bebelaar, Michel Godard, and Wolfgang Puschnig. Joos received the Jazz Prize of Südwestfunk in 1984 and the Honorary Prize of the Baden-Württemberg for his lifetime achievements in 2017. He passed away on December 7, 2019, in Baden-Baden.
