Phantom Buffalo, an indie-rock band from Portland, Maine, was originally known as the Ponys until 2004 and consisted of Jonathan Balzano-Brookes (vocals, guitar), Tim Burns (guitar, vocals), Joe Domrad (drums), Jacob Chamberlain (drums), Sean Newton (bass), and Philip Willey (guitar, accordion, keyboards). Their jangly, psychedelic pop music has been compared to acts like the Byrds and New Zealand’s the Chills. The group decided to change their name after both they and a Chicago-based band of the same name were invited to perform at South by Southwest. Phantom Buffalo released their debut album Shishimumu in 2004 under Time-Lag Records domestically and Rough Trade Records in the UK. Subsequent releases include Cement Postcard With Owl Colours (2010) and Tadaloora (2012), both released on Microcultures in France.
