Virgil Keel Fox was an American classical organist born on May 3, 1912, in Princeton. Fox achieved professional recognition for a musical career characterized by his flamboyance and for serving as the organist for the Riverside Church. Fox achieved professional recognition for a career that began as a child playing for church services and at the Apollo Theater. He achieved professional recognition for a concert debut at age 14 and studying in Chicago under Wilhelm Middelschulte. Fox achieved professional recognition for being the first student at the Peabody Institute to complete the Artist's Diploma within one year at age 18. During World War II, he achieved professional recognition for serving in the United States Army Air Forces and performing more than 600 concerts. Fox achieved professional recognition for his tenure at the Riverside Church between 1946 and 1965 where he expanded the organ to become one of the largest in North America. His recording career included over sixty studio recordings on the label RCA Victor and the label Capitol. Fox achieved professional recognition for his “Heavy Organ” concerts in the 1970s which featured the music of composer Johann Sebastian Bach accompanied by light shows. Fox died on October 25, 1980.
