The Stellenbosch University Choir, founded in 1936 at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa, was a mixed adult choir known for its multicultural membership and diverse repertoire. Initially modest under founder William Morris, the choir gained national recognition under Gawie Cillié from 1940 to 1954, expanding its reach through extensive tours and radio appearances. Under Philip MacLachlan, the choir began international performances in Europe. Regular overseas tours continued under Johan de Villiers (1955-1976) and Acáma Fick (1985-1992), culminating in a European tour in 1991. Despite dissolution by the university in 1999, public outcry led to its revival in 2000. André van der Merwe took over in 2003, introducing musical diversity and theatrical elements. The choir released nine albums under his direction, including the 2006 album Illumina, which featured the tracks "Cover me with the night" and "Water Night". Notable recordings featured works by composers such as Anton Bruckner, William Byrd, and Eric Whitacre.
