Tras su salida en 2015 de la banda de black metal Immortal, que ayudó a fundar en 1991, el cantante y guitarrista Abbath Doom Occulta, alias de Olve Elkemo, nacido el 27 de junio de 1973, decidió proseguir su carrera bajo su propio nombre artístico, reducido a Abbath. Aunque se concibió como un proyecto en solitario, incluía al bajista de God Seed, King Ov Hell y al batería Creature, que pronto colgó las botas el mismo año de su lanzamiento. Se publicó un primer álbum para marcar este nuevo comienzo. Sobriamente titulado Abbath, fue precedido por tres singles: "Winter Bane", "Count the Dead " y "Ashes of the Damned".
