Out of the Blue was an American jazz ensemble formed by Blue Note Records in 1984 to showcase emerging musicians from the label. Its live album Live at Mt. Fuji, recorded at the Mount Fuji Jazz Festival in 1986 and released the following year, reached number 9 on the Billboard Top Jazz Albums chart. The ensemble’s lineup included trumpeter Michael Philip Mossman, saxophonists Kenny Garrett, Steve Wilson, Ralph Bowen, pianists Harry Pickens and Renee Rosnes, bassists Robert Hurst and Kenny Davis, and drummers Ralph Peterson Jr. and Billy Drummond. Subsequent albums included Spiral Staircase (1989). The group disbanded in 1989 after its members moved on to solo careers.
