The Rokes were an English pop rock and beat music ensemble from London established in 1963 in Italy. They achieved professional recognition for a musical career characterized by their success in the Italian music scene and for their song “Piangi Con Me” (1966). The ensemble was founded by vocalist and guitarist Shel Shapiro, guitarist Johnny Charlton, bassist Bobby Posner, and drummer Mike Shepstone. The Rokes achieved professional recognition for a career that began after performing rhythm and blues in London clubs and moving to West Germany and Italy as the backing band for the musician Colin Hicks. They achieved professional recognition for signing with the manager Teddy Reno in 1963 and renaming themselves for their debut single, a cover of the song “Shake, Rattle and Roll” (1964). Their recording career included the hit single “C'è Una Strana Espressione Nei Tuoi Occhi” (1965) which reached number 11 and the hit single “Che Colpa Abbiamo Noi” (1966) which reached number 3. The ensemble achieved professional recognition for the song “È La Pioggia Che Va” (1966) which reached Number 1 in Italy. The Rokes achieved professional recognition for re-recording “Piangi Con Me” in English as “Let's Live for Today” (1967), which sold over one million copies worldwide. Their discography included four studio recordings such as The Rokes (1965) and Che mondo strano (1966). The ensemble became inactive in 1970 after selling more than five million records.
