Poésie Noire, a Belgian EBM, dark wave, and new wave music band, formed in 1984 and was based in Belgium. The group initially consisted of seven members but eventually narrowed down to Johan Casters, Marianne Valvekens, and Herman Gillis. Poésie Noire gained prominence after winning the 1985 Breekend Rock Festival, which led to supporting tours with Dead Can Dance and the Sisters of Mercy. Their debut album The Gioconda Smile was released in 1985, followed by a prolific output including albums such as Hum and Haw (1986), Tales of Doom (1987), and Tetra (1988). Notable singles include "The Noble Art" (1985) and "Starvation of a Mind" (1986). In 1992, after releasing their ninth album under the name TBX, Poésie Noire disbanded due to label issues. The band reformed in 2010 with the release of Sense of Purpose.
