Dominus, a Danish death metal band formed in 1991 in Ringsted by Michael Poulsen. The group's initial releases included two demos, Ambrosius Locus and Astaroth, followed by their first commercial appearance on the compilation album Fuck You, We're from Denmark. In 1995, Dominus released their debut studio album, View to the Dim, under Progress Records. The band's lineup evolved over time, with notable members including Lars Hald and Anders Nielsen. Their subsequent albums, The First 9 (1996) and Vol. Beat (1997) showcased a shift in musical style towards metal with rock 'n' roll influences. In 2000, Dominus released their album, Godfallos, before disbanding later that year. Following the group's dissolution, Michael Poulsen formed Volbeat, inspired by the title of their album Vol. Beat.
