Earl Poole Ball Jr. was born on March 12, 1941 in Columbia, Mississippi and raised in Foxworth, Mississippi by his parents and grandparents. He began playing piano at age eight under the tutelage of his aunt Kathryn Ball. At 16, he played piano on The Jimmy Swan Television Show in Hattiesburg. In 1959, he was hired to play piano for Louisiana Governor Jimmie Davis' re-election campaign. After moving to Los Angeles, he worked as a session musician and house pianist at various clubs. Ball's career took off when he joined Johnny Cash’s band in 1977, touring and recording with him until Cash's retirement in 1997. He produced Cash's album Rockabilly Blues (1980) and collaborated with artists such as Buck Owens, Gram Parsons, and The Byrds. Ball contributed to films including They All Laughed (1981).
