When people think of Czech country music and tramping, two things usually come to mind: the songs everyone has sung around the campfire, and the unmistakable cartoons of big-eared tramps, little animals and green men. Both came from one man – Honza Vyčítal (1942–2020).
In 1965 he co-founded the legendary band Greenhorns (renamed Zelenáči during the normalization era). As its artistic leader, singer and distinctive lyricist, he took classic American country and bluegrass hits and gave them a brand-new Czech soul. Thanks to his feel for language, songs like Rovnou, tady rovnou, Blízko Little Big Hornu and Zatracenej život became folk standards.
Honza was not only a musician – he was one of the most distinctive Czech cartoonists, known to generations from magazines, record sleeves and tramping logbooks. In a single speech bubble he could capture the Czech character, the love of nature, beer and a good prank. He would surely be glad that his songs, lyrics and drawings keep bringing joy to new generations.
