Scarlet Sails is an alternative rock band from New York City, formed in 2015 by Olya Fomina and Brian Viglione. The duo met at a Black Flag tribute show in June 2013, with Fomina being a classically trained pianist from Russia who moved to New York City at age 21, and Viglione having recently joined the American folk punk band Violent Femmes. Their first EP, Scarlet Sails, was recorded in late 2015 and released on January 15, 2016. In December 2015, Viglione left Violent Femmes to focus on Scarlet Sails. The band's debut album, Future from the Past, was recorded in December 2016 and released on April 10, 2017, following a successful Kickstarter campaign. Throughout their career, they have been noted for their "lyrical and intense" style, often described as "theatrical," “noir-pop,” and “genre-bending.” Their influences include David Bowie, Oasis, Radiohead, and Nina Simone.
