Pantxoa Karrere, born 1948 in Azkaine, and Peio Ospital, born 1948 in Ezpeleta, formed the duet Pantxoa eta Peio in 1969 after meeting at the Maîtrise Épiscopale de Bayonne. Their debut single, “Itziarren semea” (1969), released by Diapason, also featured the tracks “Eñaut Bidegorri”, “Jo bezate ezkilek”, and “Ttakulin”. In the same year, they performed their first original composition, “Uztaritz”. The duo's breakthrough came in 1975 with their self-titled studio album, Peio Ospital eta Pantxoa Carrere, released through the Elkar label, which included the classic songs “Batasuna” and “Aita kartzelan duzu”. Subsequent releases include Euskalduna naiz eta maite dut herria (1978), Bai Euskarari (1980), Bakezko besarkada batean (1985), Eguzkiaren musu (1990), 1969-1991 (1991), Oles ta oles (1997), Lapurtar koblariak (2002), and Lurra eta maitasuna (2006). A live album, Beste Bat (2009), recorded on September 11, 2009, captured their anniversary performance. The duo announced a farewell tour in 2026 titled Pantxoa eta Peio – Azken bira, concluding a career of Basque cultural expression.
