Jo Johnson is a British musician and composer, best known for her role as guitarist in the influential punk band Huggy Bear during the early 1990s. Huggy Bear’s energetic, politically charged sound—marked by raw, unapologetic punk and riot grrrl influences—left an indelible mark on the indie scene. However, after the band’s breakup, Jo Johnson's artistic journey took a transformative turn towards ambient music, a genre that would allow her to explore new sonic landscapes and create intimate, atmospheric soundscapes. Drawing on her experience with texture and raw emotion, her solo work evokes a deeply personal and introspective space. Beginning with her 2014 debut for Further Records, Weaving—and taking in releases such as Her (2020) and Escape Now (2025)—her ambient and electronica compositions often blend lush synthesizer drones, subtle field recordings, and delicate electronic manipulation to create immersive, meditative environments.
