The Hummingbirds were an Australian indie pop band formed in Sydney in 1986 from the remnants of Bug Eyed Monsters. The original lineup included Simon Holmes on vocals and guitar, John Boyce on bass, and Mark Temple on drums. After a few months, Alannah Russack joined as vocalist and guitarist, and Robyn St. Clare replaced Boyce on bass. The band debuted in July 1987 with the single "Alimony" and released three more singles the following year: "Get On Down"/"Everything You Said", "Swim to Shore", and "Hindsight". In early 1989, they signed to rooArt and released their breakthrough single "Blush", which peaked at Number 1 on the alternative music chart and number 19 on the ARIA singles charts. Their debut album Lovebuzz, produced by Mitch Easter, was released in October 1989 and reached number 31 on the ARIA album charts. The band's second album, Va Va Voom, was released in April 1991 but faced delays due to label issues. After leaving rooArt in May 1992, they released two EPs, Gone and Tail, on IV Recordings before disbanding in December 1993. The Hummingbirds reformed for several reunion shows between 2011 and 2017, including performances at the Big Day Out festival and a tribute concert to The Cure. Simon Holmes died in July 2017, leading to a tribute night featuring many bands and the release of a limited edition vinyl LP compiling their last two EPs.
