Members of the ARIA Hall of Fame since 2007, Hoodoo Gurus formed in Sydney, Australia, in 1981. Singer/songwriter Dave Faulkner had previously performed with the punk band Manikins, but he channeled a different set of influences with Hoodoo Gurus, whose debut album Stoneage Romeos (1984) featuring a mix of pop hooks, punky guitars, and kitschy lyrics rooted in American pop culture. The album went gold in Australia, while its 1985 follow-up Mars Needs Guitars! went triple-platinum and peaked at Number 2. Overseas, Hoodoo Gurus also enjoyed popularity in the US, with the first four albums in the band's catalog all peaking at Number 1 on the American college radio chart. "Come Anytime," a single from the band's 1989 release, Magnum Cum Louder, also topped the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. Back in Australia, 1992's Kinky went platinum and spawned another International hit with "Miss Freelove '69," which peaked at Number 19 in Australia and Number 3 on America's Modern Rock Tracks chart. 1994's Crank and 1996's Blue Cave both went gold, and Hoodoo Gurus took a break from the studio following the releases of 2010's Purity of Essence and 2014's Gravy Train. Eight years later, they reconvened for their tenth album, Chariot of the Gods.
