Nada Surf

Hailing from New York, where they formed in 1992, Nada Surf is made up of Matthew Caws (vocals, guitar) Daniel Lorca (bass) Ira Elliot (drums). Mastering power pop in the post-grunge, Britpop era, Nada Surf made a name for themselves in 1996 with their debut album High/Low and a sarcastic, infectious single, "Popular", which immediately reached No. 51 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 10 in France, where it was awarded a gold disc. Having made the leap from indie band to international success, the latter seemed ephemeral when their second album The Proximity Effect (1998) failed to reach the American charts, as did its successor, the late Let Go, released in 2003 in two different versions, American and European. However, they did chart in France, where audiences remained loyal to the band. The persevering American trio returned to their independent status under the Barsuk label, releasing their fourth album, The Weight Is a Gift, in 2005, marking a return to the international and American charts by the back door, and moving up the positions with its successor Lucky (2008). In 2010, If I Had a Hi-Fi marks an interlude with its varied covers ranging from The Moody Blues and Kate Bush to Coralie Clément, Arthur Russell, Depeche Mode, The Go-Betweens and Spoon. Two years later, the trio returned to their own compositions with The Stars Are Indifferent to Astronomy (No. 86), which continued to chart well in Europe. Guitarist Doug Gillard, who had previously played as a guest, is now considered a full member on the following album You Know Who You Are (2016). Then comes the time for celebrations with the 15th anniversary of Let Go, which the band admits will influence the creative process of the following album, Never Not Together (2020), launched by the catchy single "So Much Love". This first collaboration with producer Ian Laughton continues on Moon Mirror (2024), which, recorded at Rockfield Studios in Monmouthshire, Wales, marks the band's first signing with New West Records.
